The Regional 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) Forum in Asia and the Pacific will hold its eighth meeting in Indore, India, from 9-12 April 2018. Launched in November 2009 in Tokyo, Japan, the forum is intended to serve as a framework for 3R policy dialogue among high-level government representatives from Asia-Pacific countries, city mayors and administrators and other professionals, as well as to provide technical assistance for country projects, and information sharing and networking for the promotion of 3R policies in the region.
The forum is co-organized by the UN Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the governments of India and Japan. Its theme is “Achieving Clean Water, Clean Land and Clean Air through 3R and Resource Efficiency – A 21st Century Vision for Asia – Pacific Communities.” Among other issues, the forum will examine:
- the role of a circular economy in reducing air, land and water pollution, and in enhancing national productivity;
- how to promote zero waste societies in Asia-Pacific countries;
- how 3R policies can contribute to protection of coastal and marine ecosystems;
- the role of 3R technologies in promoting resource security; and
- options for financing implementation of 3R policies and programs, including infrastructure development.
The forum will also feature the launch of “The State of the 3Rs in Asia and the Pacific,” a regular assessment report prepared by experts regarding progress in implementation of the Ha Noi 3R Declaration (2013-2023) adopted at the fourth meeting held in 2013 in Ha Noi, Viet Nam. The expert report was one of the chief recommendations from the sixth meeting held in 2015 in Malé, Maldives. Please consult IISD RS’ summaries of the fourth and sixth forums.
A parallel Asian Mayors Policy Dialogue will be held that will discuss:
- the contribution of the 3Rs to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UN-Habitat III New Urban Agenda; and
- special waste challenges, such as plastics, chemical wastes, e-waste and medical wastes.
The Dialogue is expected to conclude with the signing by mayors and city authorities of an Indore Declaration on Achieving Clean Water, Clean Land and Clean Air in Cities.
