BRIEFING for Thursday, 17 March

COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN (CSW) ACTING AS THE PREPARATORY COMMITTEE (PREPCOM) FOR THE SPECIAL SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ENTITLED "WOMEN 2000: GENDER EQUALITY, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY" (17 MARCH, 1999)

The PrepCom met in afternoon and evening sessions for informal negotiations aimed at reaching agreement on the draft text for a resolution on 'Preparations for the Special Session of the General Assembly'.

Because of delays while delegates negotiated their positions within their respective groups and the resulting text was prepared, the meeting did not begin until shortly after 4:00 pm. Discussion revolved around the positions and drafting alternatives outlined by the G77/China, the EU and JUSCANNZ. With delegates showing a willingness to compromise on some issues, a number of brackets were removed from the text. Informal negotiations are scheduled to continue tomorrow morning.
