THE WEEK IN REVIEW: 28 MAY-9 JUNE 2009
28 May: Pan African Parliament elections: The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) elected a new  Idriss Ndele Moussa, from Chad as its new President. The PAP also elected four Vice-Presidents;  Bethel Amadi, Nigeria (for Western African); Mary Mugyenyi, Uganda (for Eastern African);  Laroussi Hammi, Algeria, ( for Northern Africa); and Joram Gumbo, Zimbabwe (for Southern African).
28 May: AfDB Clean Energy Fund:   The African Development Bank Group's (AfDB) Board of Director's approved a ZAR 100 million equity investment in the Evolution One Fund, the first specialized private equity fund focused on the acceleration and deployment of clean energy and sustainable technologies across southern Africa. 29 May: AMCEN Special Session:   African Ministers attending the third special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) on Climate Change, which convened from 25-29 May 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya, adopted the Nairobi Declaration. The Declaration highlights major challenges and opportunities in the negotiations for a more equitable climate regime, and provides African countries with a platform to make a strong case for support at the climate change conference in Copenhagen, in December 2009. 4 June: Health Finance:  The International Financial Committee, African Development Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the German development finance institution DEG have established a private equity fund that will invest in Africa's health sector. [Press Release]
8 June: AU-ECA: The second Joint Annual Meetings of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of  Economy and Finance and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA_ Conference of Ministers of Finance,  Planning and Economic Development, took place in Cairo, Egypt from 6-7 June 2009.  The meeting was proceeded by an Expert group meeting, which prepared recommendations for inclusion in the Ministerial Statement, adopted at the conclusion of the meeting. 9 June: COMESA: The thirteenth Summit of the Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit, held in Zimbabwe, from 8-9 June, launched the COMESA Customs Union and the COMESA Regional Payment and Settlement System. [More Information]

ON THE AGENDA
AFRICAN UNION SUMMIT
The thirteenth  Ordinary African Union Summit takes place in Sirte, Libya from 24 June to 3 July. The Summit includes the following meetings:  eighteenth Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives   Committee (24-26 June); fifteenth Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (28-30 June); and AU Assembly (1-3 July). The theme is: “Investing in Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security.” In addition the meeting is expected to address the following proposals: accession of the African Union Commission to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification: For a rapid accession to better serve African interests (Chad); and establishment of the African Agency for the Protection of  Territorial and Economic Waters of African Countries (Libya). IDRC: ALL FOR CONCEPT NOTES: FOOD, HEALTH AND ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN EAST AND SOUTHERN AFRICA
The Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health Program (Ecohealth www.idrc.ca/ecohealth) of  Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC-Canada) is pleased to announce a call for concept notes on food, health and adaptation to climate change. Concept notes should entail research and capacity building activities that use ecosystem approaches to human health to help understand and address health vulnerabilities related to food and nutritional security or food safety arising from climate change and climate variability in eastern and southern Africa. Deadline for submission of concept notes: 30 June 2009, at midnight (Canadian EST). [Call for Proposals]
