	Highlights for Thursday, 21 February 2008 The Expert Group Meeting on Land for Sustainable Urbanization in Africa opened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 21 February 2008. Sponsored by the Global Land Tool Network, experts are meeting to prepare and identify the key points for emphasis on the thematic reviews on Land and on Africa that will be articulated at the sixteenth Session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16), which is scheduled to take place at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States, from 5-16 May 2008.


	During the opening plenary held on Thursday morning, participants heard opening statements delivered by Josué Dioné, Director, Food Security and Sustainable Development, UN Economic \|Commission for Africa (ECA), on behalf of ECA Executive Director Abdoulaye Janneh, Alioune Badiane, Chief, UN-HABITAT Regional Office for Africa and Arab States, Ali Mohamed (Kenya), Chair of ACSD-5, and Mafa Chipeta, sub-regional coordinator for Eastern Africa and FAO Representative in Ethiopia to the AU and ECA. Participants then meet in a morning and two afternoon plenary sessions under the theme ‘Land and Africa’, to discuss the expert presentations made on: land for sustainable urbanization in Africa; key land issues in ACSD report to NY; Land and livelihoods in urban and peri-urban Africa – rural-urban linkages; Global Land Tool Network; the UNECA/AU/AfDB land policy framework; land information and management for sustainable urbanization; the urban land market in Africa; gender and land; innovative land management and the continuum of land rights in Africa; and land, administration, governance and corruption in Africa. A comprehensive IISD Reporting Services (IISD RS) summary report of the meeting will be available online on Monday, 25 February 2008.
