Resumed Review Conference on the UN Fish Stocks Agreement

Many highlighted progress on strengthening the ecosystem approach, addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, preserving deep-sea ecosystems, and promoting coordination between Regional Fisheries Management Organizations. But there was no consensus to reference the Agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework

Eight years after the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the international community assessed progress on its implementation. Taking place at “a defining point in history,” and against the backdrop of many global crises, delegates called for better governance, investments in resilience, and a focus on disaster prevention.

18th Session of the UNFF

Technical discussions during the week included interlinkages between the Global Forest Goals, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Speakers informed delegates on: regenerative agriculture; the role of the Global Environment Facility, the Adaptation Fund, and regional development banks; the forests-energy-livelihoods nexus; and the potential of carbon markets for forest finance.

PCB Fair: Launch of the report on progress towards elimination of PCBs

The Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS) Secretariat kicked off the PCB Fair by presenting a report on progress toward eliminating PCBs and ensuring the environmentally sound waste management of chemicals and wastes, prepared in consultation with a small intersessional working group.

2023 Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS COPs)

Beyond addressing resource mobilization and the illegal traffic of hazardous chemicals and wastes, delegates tried to effectiveness challenges under the Rotterdam Convention, listed new persistent organic pollutants and adopted a compliance mechanism under the Stockholm Convention, and tackled guidelines on different categories of hazardous wastes under the Basel Convention.

UN World Data Forum 2023

At the third in-person UN World Data Forum in Hangzhou, China, delegates will seek solutions to challenges identified by the global data and statistics community, including developing more inclusive data as well as maximizing the use and value of data for better decision making.
