DAILY WEB COVERAGE

CBD COP-MOP 6

On Friday WG I reconvened briefly in the morning to approve the decision on socio-economic considerations and adopt the WG’s report. The budget group met throughout the day to resolve outstanding issues with regard to a Secretariat staff post and securing funds for the various AHTEGs established by other decisions. The closing plenary convened at 5:15 pm on Friday.

The plenary was suspended to allow for the finalization of the decision on the budget. Plenary reconvened at 8:30 pm to adopt the decision on the budget. Delegates resolved outstanding issues in the decisions on unintentional transboundary movements and the financial mechanism and resources and adopted 16 decisions and the reports of the working groups.

COP/MOP 6 Chair M.F. Farooqui, India, gavels the meeting to a close at 9:30 pm.

The budget contact group engaged in protracted negotiations throughout the day, with delegates debating whether the AHTEGs mandated by the COP/MOP should be covered out of the budget or rely on voluntary contributions; and whether a post for the Biosafety Division of the Secretariat should be upgraded.
