The fifteenth session of the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) will be held from 19-23 January 2015, at the FAO Headquarters, in Rome, Italy.

A special event on food security and genetic diversity will take place on Friday, 16 January 2015, presenting country and stakeholder perspectives on challenges and opportunities in integrating biodiversity and genetic resources into national food security and nutrition objectives. The event will discuss the current status of genetic diversity and biodiversity considerations in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the respective roles of the CGRFA and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The CGRFA is expected to consider a series of cross-sectoral items, including: the preparation of the State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture report; targets and indicators for biodiversity for food and agriculture; access and benefit-sharing for genetic resources for food and agriculture; biodiversity and nutrition; application and integration of biotechnologies for the conservation and sustainable utilization of genetic resources for food and agriculture; and climate change and genetic resources for food and agriculture. The Commission will also consider: animal genetic resources, including the preparation of the second State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture report and implementation and updating of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources; forest genetic resources, including follow-up to the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources; plant genetic resources, including a review of the implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, and the preparation of the third State of the World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture report; aquatic genetic resources; and micro-organisms and invertebrates. The Commission will further review the implementation of its Multi-Year Programme of Work.
