Highlights for Thursday, 9 October 2014
CBD COP 12 & NP COP/MOP 1WG I addressed operations of the Convention and the multi-year programme of work (MYPOW); and considered a conference room paper (CRP) on support for implementation of the Strategic Plan. WG II considered biofuels and cooperation with other organizations, and addressed CRPs on liability and redress, invasive alien species (IAS) and Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. Contact groups addressed the financial mechanism and resource mobilization, and compliance under the Nagoya Protocol. Friends of the Chair groups convened on capacity building, EBSAs and the “indigenous peoples” terminology.

Participatory Process in the NBSAPs Revision Process

This side event presented the results of a project aiming at facilitating the documentation and analysis of processes for the revision of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in Antigua and Barbuda, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Fiji, Georgia, Guatemala, Iraq, Namibia and the Philippines. The project was conducted by IUCN in collaboration with the CBD Secretariat, and funded by the Government of Japan. A draft report on the project outcomes was presented at COP 12 (UNEP/CBD/COP/12/INF/38).

GEF Support for Capacity Building for Implementation of the Nagoya Protocol

The side event focused on how to make the best use of the technical and financial resources available from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to support national and regional implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS). The GEF Agencies currently assisting countries with the development and implementation of ABS projects (UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme, Inter-American Development Bank and IUCN) presented their experiences and comparative advantages for those countries working with them during the sixth replenishment of the GEF (GEF-6).
