Side Event:
Farmers' Rights - Challenges, Success Stories and Ways
Forward
The side event was held in the evening of Tuesday, 2 June, and attracted around 80 participants.
It was organized by the Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI), Norway, in collaboration with GTZ, Germany, and the Development Fund. Teshome Hunduma Mulesa of the Development Fund welcomed the participants while Regine Andersen, FNI, gave the introductory remarks and outlined the challenges related to Farmers' Rights, highlighted
success stories from the realization of these rights and made
suggestions regarding possible ways forward for the Treaty.
Bert Visser, Centre of Genetic Resources, the Netherlands, presented the results of an international online conference on options for Farmers' Rights, while Wilhemina
Pelegrina, SEARICE, Philippines, provided information on Farmers' Rights issues and experiences
in the Philippines. Presentations were followed by an open discussion
among representatives from various civil society organizations, farmers,
the seed sector and the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). |
