Highlights for Tuesday, 3 July 2007

On Tuesday, participants to the twelfth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened in the Committee of the Whole throughout the day to consider the in-depth review of the application of the ecosystem approach (EA) and of the implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC).

Review of the Application of the Ecosystem Approach



Ole Hendrickson, Canada, cautioned against the development of further standards, prioritizing performance indicators instead.	Michael Andrew, Saint Lucia, called for short, medium and long-term implementation strategies for the ecosystem approach.	Gustavo Induni Alfaro, Costa Rica, emphasized the need for a robust scientific basis for a better understanding of the ecosystem approach.



	Arild Lindgaard, Sweden, proposed developing guidance on ecosystem approach application in different sectors and ecosystems.		Victoria Lichtschein, Argentina, opposed references to incentives, indicators and standards.



Atsuhiro Yoshinaka, Japan.	Rawson Yonazi, Tanzania.	Sarah Nelson, UK.



	Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention Peter Bridgewater stated that ecosystem management should ensure that no ecosystem services are lost, even under conditions of rapid change.		Valentina Germani, UNDOALOS, reported that ICP-8 had been mandated to focus on the application of the ecosystem approach to oceans.

Review of Implementation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation



	Linda Collette, FAO, focused her presentation on GSPC targets.		Jon Lovett, University of Twente and University of York, said climate change will have major impacts on the distribution of plant diversity.



	Neville Ash, UNEP-WCMC, emphasized the need to mobilize available data before 2010.		Huang Hongwen, South China Institute of Botany, presented on the GSPC’s contribution to poverty alleviation and rural development.



Claudine Ramiarison, Madagascar.	Pan Khang Aun, Malaysia.	James Seyani, Malawi.



	Selby Remy, the Seychelles, noted his country's national experience could be of use to other small island developing states.		Alfred Oteng-Yeboah, Ghana, highlighted funding needs for implementation and capacity building.



Peter Skoberne, Slovenia.	Sigurdur Thriainsson, Iceland.	Uwe Schippmann, Germany.



	Lidan An, China, called for accelerated implementation of the GSPC strategy.		Juanita Chaves, Colombia, proposed developing regional tools for information exchange and capacity building.



	Htun Paw Oo, Myanmar.		Hesiquio Benitez, Mexico.



Jane Smart, IUCN, highlighted RapidList, a new tool for rapid assessment of species conservation status.	Toby Hodgkin, Bioversity International, on behalf of CGIAR, reported how its international research centers contribute to crop sustainability through its in and ex situ collections.	Sara Oldfield, Botanical Gardens Conservation International, offered continuing support for toolkit development.
