The 23rd meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical, and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 23) and the 11th meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (WG8J 11) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are expected to further the work of the Convention, providing relevant advice to the Conference of the Parties (COP).
Both meetings are expected to contribute towards the preparation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, addressing the links between nature and culture. SBSTTA 23 will further inform the scientific and technical evidence base, while WG8j 11 will discuss the contributions of traditional knowledge, innovations, and practices of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) with respect to the post-2020 framework.
Other items in the agenda of SBSTTA 23 include:
- Biodiversity and climate change;
- Sustainable wildlife management; and
- New and emerging issues, which include six submissions by parties and organizations.
WG8j 11 will further address progress towards Aichi Target 18 (traditional knowledge) and recommendations to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
Recommendations produced during the meetings of the two bodies will be forwarded to the 15th meeting of the CBD COP, to be held in late 2020. As discussed in our summary of COP 14, held in December 2018 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the Conference set up an intersessional open-ended working group (OEWG) on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Our coverage from the first meeting of the OEWG, held in August 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya, can be found here. Discussions are expected to lead to the development of an integrated framework for the CBD and its protocols, which can also serve other biodiversity-related processes and instruments. For further details on all agenda items, you can also see our coverage from the last meetings of the two bodies, SBSTTA 21 and WG8j 10.
WG8j 11 will take place from 20-22 November 2019, followed by SBSTTA 23 from 25-29 November. Both meetings will be held in Montreal, Canada.
