Highlights from Wednesday, 17 October

 

On Wednesday, delegates convened in two sub-working groups (SWGs) in morning and late afternoon sessions. In the morning, SWG I addressed an international regime on access and benefit-sharing (ABS); SWG II considered indicators for assessing progress towards the 2010 target with regard to traditional knowledge. Participants met in a brief plenary in the late afternoon to review progress made and then recovened in the SWGs.

Sub-Working Group I
 

 

Regarding a compilation of the main proposals on an international regime on ABS, Gurdial Singh Nijar, Malaysia (left), expressed concern that the document did not capture all proposals and asked that it be revised. Sub-Working Group II
 
 
On indicators, Portugal, for the EU, noted the focus should be on practical and meaningful indicators, and opposed inclusion of some indicators that did fall under the mandate of the Article 8(j) WG and went beyond COP orientation.
 
 
Joji Carino, speaking for the IIFB Working Group on Indicators (left), reported on the Group's regional consultations and the international expert seminar on indicators.
 
 
On indicators, Colombia supported adopting the indicator list as a basis for future work.
