Fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs COP4)

Stockholm COP agrees on synergies recommendation

Water jet fountain by Lake Geneva is a familiar landmark of the city of Geneva.

The fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP4) to the Stockholm Convention convened for its second day in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday, 5 May 2009.

During the morning plenary, delegates considered the recommendation of the Ad Hoc Joint Working Group on Cooperation and Coordination among the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and agreed to forward it to the high-level segment for adoption. Delegates also discussed national implementation plans.

During the afternoon, delegates considered issues related to financial resources and effectiveness evaluation.

The contact group on new chemicals convened during the morning and early afternoon. The group tasked the Secretariat with preparing a draft decision on waste and recycling of brominated flame retardants. 

The contact group on non-compliance convened throughout the day and will continue its work on Wednesday. 

Contact groups on effectiveness evaluation and financial resources and technical assistance convened into the evening.

Laurent Granier, GEF, presented the GEF report on its activities related to the Stockholm Convention.
John Buccini, Canada, introduced an assessment of implementation funding needs for 2010-2014.
