The fourteenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-14) met for its fourth day on Thursday, 20 September 2018. Delegates continued to focus on the technical items on the agenda of this meeting.
In the morning, POPRC members worked in a closed drafting group to prepare a decision on the addendum to the Committee’s recommendation that the Conference of the Parties consider listing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts, and related compounds in the Annexes to the Stockholm Convention.
In the afternoon, delegates gathered in plenary to hear updates from the Chairs of the contact groups on PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts, and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF). On PFOA, contact group Chair Jean-François Ferry (Canada) reported that the group had concluded its discussion of film-forming foams and was close to completing a draft decision. On PFOS, contact group Chair Martien Janssen (the Netherlands) reported that the group had identified the main issues for discussion. He said that the group had converged on the need for clarity that the current listing for PFOS, its salts, and PFOSF in the Convention includes sulfluramid. He said they would continue meeting to discuss the evaluation of the continued needs and narrowing the scope of the current acceptable purposes.
Following this brief plenary session, delegates resumed discussions in contact groups on both PFOS and PFOA, and continued working into the evening.
IISD Reporting Services, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) Meeting Coverage, provided limited daily web coverage from POPRC-14. In addition, IISD Reporting Services has published a summary and analysis report from the meeting.
