POPRC-2 Highlights: Tuesday, 7 November 2006

On Tuesday, delegates discussed draft risk profiles on chlordecone, hexabromobiphenyl and lindane. Chair Reiner Arndt (Germany) established contact groups to elaborate draft decisions on these chemicals.

Delegates further examined Mexico’s proposal on the inclusion of alpha- and beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), two isomers of lindane, in the Annexes of the Convention. No conclusion was reached, and the matter was deferred to a contact group.

Regarding operational procedures, delegates discussed and approved a list of experts nominated by Parties to support the Committee in its work. They could not reach agreement on confidentiality arrangements, and decided to resume discussion on this matter later in the week..

The IISD Reporting Services (IISD RS) summary report of POPRC will be available online on Monday, 13 November 2006.

The Japanese delegation gathered at the end of the day for a quick debrief
Alfredo Cueva (Ecuador) raised translation and language issues during the afternoon session on confidentiality.
Dario C. Sebularse (the Philippines) stated a ban on lindane production would also address the issue of alpha- and beta-HCH, as both are by-products of lindane's production process.
Ian Rae (Australia) chaired the intersesssional contact group on PentaBDE.
Indrani Chandrasekharan (India) debated issues of confidentiality
