The 22nd meeting of the Animals Committee (AC-22) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) convened from 7-13 July 2006, in Lima, Peru. On 7 and 8 July, a joint session was held with the 16th meeting of the CITES Plants Committee (PC-16).

The AC discussed 28 agenda items and adopted six recommendations on a numer of issues. More information.

African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus). On Tuesday, AC participants of the review of significant trade working group considered species subject to review, including how to approach recommend on the African grey parrot.
The spiny dogfish shark (Squalus canthias). The working group on conservation and management of sharks agreed recommendations on: the implementation of shark listings, trade related threats to sharks, key shark and ray species affected by trade, and improving shark conservation and international trade regulations.

Chair Thomas Althaus (Switzerland) led discussions in the 22nd meeting of the Animals Committee on issues relating to transport of live specimens, biological and trade status of sea cucumbers in the families holothuriidae and stichopodidae, review of significant trade of Appendix II – listed species and the periodic review of animal species included in CITES appendices

On Tuesday, participants in the Working Group on bigleaf mahogany discussed a draft decision to address concerns on the status of this timber species

On Thursday the Plants Committee addressed and adopted draft recommendations on several issues including orchids, medicinal plants and bigleaf mahogany, which will be presented at the next Conference of the Parties to be held in The Netherlands in June 2007

Patiño) The implementation of the listing of Bigleaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) in CITES’ Appendix II was evaluated during a three day meeting of the Mahogany working group prior to the PC meeting. The recommendations of the Mahogany working group are being addressed by the Plants Committee.
