Highlights for Monday, 18 July 2011
CITESJohn Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General, opened the 25th meeting of the CITES Animals Committee (AC 25) on 18 July 2011. He emphasized cooperation between the Scientific Committees, Standing Committee and the Conference of the Parties (CoP) and the underpinning role of science in the functioning of the Convention. The Committee elected Ibero Solana (Europe representative) as AC 25 Chair, and Caroline Caceres (North America representative) as Vice-Chair by acclamation. AC Chair Ibero Solana said he was committed to working towards ensuring that the AC’s work is an influencing force in CITES’ decisions.

The AC Plenary addressed organizational matters and established a working group on the Review of Significant Trade (RST), an informal group on strategic planning, and a drafting group on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The working group on RST is expected to convene on Tuesday afternoon, all day Wednesday and on Thursday morning.
