Twenty-fifth Meeting of the Animals Committee (AC 25) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)

18-22 July 2011 | Geneva, Switzerland

Highlights for Tuesday, 19 July 2011
CITESOn Tuesday morning and early afternoon, AC 25 convened in plenary to discuss ranching, the periodic review, capacity building, sturgeons and paddlefish, sharks, snakes, tortoises and freshwater turtles, transport of live animals and nomenclature matters. During the Committee's preliminary discussion on sharks, participants aired differing views on the role of CITES vis à vis that of FAO and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), and agreed to establish a working group. On snake trade, AC 25 briefly considered the findings and recommendations from the Asian snake trade workshop convened by the Secretariat in Guangzhou, China, in April 2011, and then established a working group on this item. Over lunch, participants viewed a film entitled "The Medan Connection" by Karl Ammann on the Asian snake trade. The Committee also established working groups on the periodic review, ranching, nomenclature matters, and tortoises and freshwater turtles, as well as joint AC/PC intersessional groups on capacity building and on live animal transport.

Six of the working groups started their work in the afternoon, with the groups on nomenclature and on tortoises and freshwater turtles to convene later in the week. The working group on periodic review started considering issues arising from the review of Lynx spp. (lynx species), Colinus virginianus ridgwayi (masked bobwhite quail) Tympanuchus cupido attwateri (Attwater's greater prairie chicken) and Crocodilurus amazonicus (crocodile tegu) and brainstormed ways to improve the periodic review process, including utilizing non-party reviewers. The working group on snakes discussed, inter alia: establishing conservative annual catch and export quotas for any snake species in trade; case studies on selected snake species from the pet trade; and the snake venom trade. Working group discussions will continue on Wednesday throughout the day.
. .
L-R: Steve Nash, CITES Secretariat, presented the report on capacity building, and Mohammad Pourkazemi, Asia representative, urged support from CITES and FAO for sturgeon before the species becomes extinct.
