CITES: Fourteenth Conference of the Parties

Highlights for Sunday, 3 June 2007

The fourteenth Conference of the Parties (CoP14) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) opened on Sunday, 3 June 2007, and will continue until 15 June 2007, in The Hague, the Netherlands. Delegates to CoP14 will consider 70 agenda items and 37 proposals to amend the CITES appendices. Discussions will take place in plenary and two committees, as well as in a Ministerial Roundtable on 13 June.

Delegates heard presentations by keynote speakers, interspersed by live vocal and musical performances, as well as laser shows (below).

  Gerda Verburg, Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the Netherlands, welcomed delegates to The Hague and highlighted the inaugural Ministerial Roundtable at CoP14 as an opportunity to strengthen the authority of CITES.   Rabin Baldewsingh, Deputy Mayor of The Hague, highlighted the importance of the city as an international center of peace, justice and security.    
             
       
  Shafqat Kakakhel, Deputy Executive Director of UNEP, underlined UNEP’s continuing commitment to support CITES.   Amb. Cristian Maquieira, Chile, Chair of the Standing Committee, highlighted CITES' role within UN discussions on environmental governance.   Willem Wijnstekers, CITES Secretary-General, highlighted CITES expansion into new policy areas such as timber and fisheries.
