Fifty-seventh meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Standing Committee

Highlights for Thursday, 17 July 2008
On Thursday, CITES SC57 discussed numerous agenda items, including: Review of Significant Trade (RST), Asian big cats, intensive operations breeding tigers on a commercial scale, Tibetan antelope, great apes, sturgeons and the caviar trade database, periodic review of the appendices, bigleaf mahogany and ramin.

Jonathan Barzdo, CITES Secretariat (left), introduces the issue of Asian big cats, and notes that the Secretariat was unable to raise external funds to convene a tiger trade enforcement meeting.
S. C. Dey, Global Tiger Forum, asked for a standardized reporting format that would ensure all elements of Res. Conf. 12.5 (Conservation of and trade in tigers), and suggested the use of benchmark years to help analyze trends.
