Sixty-first Meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Standing Committee

15-19 August 2011 | Geneva, Switzerland

Highlights for Thursday, 18 August 2011
Sixty-first Meeting of the CITES Standing Committee
On Thursday, the CITES Standing Committee continued consideration of the agenda. They addressed remaining administrative issues as well as heard the terms of reference of the new CITES Strategic Vision revision working group. They also discussed engagement with the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). With regard to species trade and conservation, participants discussed rhinoceros, snake trade and conservation management, tortoises and freshwater turtles, Tibetan antelope and sturgeon. On monitoring of progress on conservation of and trade in sturgeons, the Russian Federation announced it would quit the working group on sturgeon, leaving the group with less than half of the range countries represented.

Participants also addressed the Periodic Review of Appendices and time-bound listings and several SC members and observers spoke against the proposal to establish a working group to address the use of time-bound listings but rather supported ways to improve the Periodic Review. At the end of the day there were still several items left on the agenda, including Asian big cats, great apes, bushmeat, big-leaf mahogany and ramin.
