Sixty-first Meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Standing Committee

15-19 August 2011 | Geneva, Switzerland

Highlights for Friday, 19 August 2011
Sixty-first Meeting of the CITES Standing Committee
On Friday, the Standing Committee reconvened for the last day of discussions of a record length agenda. The Committee addressed the remaining issues, including: bigleaf mahogany; ramin; great apes; Asian big cats; electronic permitting; and enforcement issues. On enforcement, the Secretariat highlighted the lifting of trade suspension measures against Nigeria and lamented the increase in illicit trade in Guinea, with false CITES documentation being issued.

The Secretariat and participants bid farewell to John Sellar, Chief of Enforcement, and Stephen Nash, Chief of Capacity Building, and thanked them for their tireless commitment to the goals of the Convention. They also wished happy birthday to Chair Størkersen.

In their closing remarks Secretary-General Scanlon and Chair Størkersen thanked the Secretariat and the participants. They announced that the next Standing Committee will be held in Geneva from 23-27 July 2012. The Chair closed the meeting at 5:31pm.
