Highlights for Thursday, 10 July 2014
.
CITES SC65On Thursday, the Standing Committee heard the first report on illegal trade in cheetahs and the recommendation that further research is required on the topic.

AC Chair Caceres reported on the AC recommendations, in particular the recommendation to have a face-to-face workshop of range States and Parties implicated in the illegal trade in cheetah and other relevant organizations. Bahrain stressed that there has been no import, legal or illegal, of cheetahs in the country since the ratification of the Convention. Botswana expressed concern in the upsurge of cheetah illegal trade, citing evidence of smuggling of cheetahs from Botswana. A working group met during the lunch break to formulate the terms of reference for an inter-sessional working group.

The SC also discussed snakes, tortoises and freshwater turtles, sharks and rays, sturgeons and paddlefish, as well as trade control and traceability matters. In the afternoon, participants reviewed reports on Great Apes, Saiga and Tibetan antelope, and looked into livelihood issues and bushmeat. The day ended with a reception hosted by the Swiss Mission to the UN in Geneva.
