Highlights from Tuesday, 7 April


On Tuesday, the AWG-LCA held contact groups on adaptation, mitigation and technology and finance. The AWG-KP held contact groups and informal consultations on Annex I emission reductions, legal matters, potential consequences, LULUCF and flexibility mechanisms. Informal consultations were also held on additional meetings.

Thelma Krug, Brazil (left photo). Bernaditas Müller, Philippines, (right photo), said that the Christmas bonus of one Wall Street banker was higher than the cumulative resources devoted to the LDC Fund. She called for unconditional and predictable adaptation funding to allow for long-term planning.
 
 
On REDD, Thailand (left photo) highlighted REDD as an adaptation strategy cutting across the four building blocks, while Australia (right photo) noted her proposal proposal for a Carbon Forest Market Mechanism.
 
On REDD+, Kevin Conrad, Papua New Guinea (left photo), emphasized the need to integrate multiple revenue streams and organize them so as to facilitate a step-wise process, with scaled-up and unconditional ODA and earmarked market-linked funding. He emphasized the need to ensure carbon market stability, possibly through setting aside a percentage of AAUs. Andrew Bishop, Guyana (right photo), emphasized the importance of conservation.

Co-Chair Thomas Kolly (center) presented a summary of ideas structured around five themes: underlying principles; the objective and scope for an adaptation framework; institutional arrangements; means of implementation; risk and insurance; and monitoring and feedback.

Delegates scramble for the text of the draft conclusions on Annex I emission reductions and on legal matters.

High School Students Lead the Way
 
A group of students from Marienschule high school in Euskirchen, Germany, presented 131 Euros collected from their classmates to William Agyemang-Bonsu, a member of the Adaptation Fund Board, as a contribution to adaptation funding. The funds were donated in response to a Climate Crisis presentation made by Stuart Scott (above left).
