Post-meeting field visit Wednesday, 25 June 2014

The Government of Jamaica hosted two field activities on June 25 to showcase selected work being done in response to climate change and towards more sustainable environmental practices. The first activity was a visit to Little Bay, Westmoreland. Little Bay is a rural community located South-east of Negril. Once a thriving fishing village, the community has turned to sea moss farming to diversify its income as fisheries have been negatively impacted by climatic and related events. Participants had a chance to learn about the climate change impacts on the community, coping strategies employed and how the sea moss farm is operated.

The second activity was a visit to the Discovery Bay Marine Lab (DBML) and a sea tour of Discovery Bay, which highlighted historic and environmental features. The DBML is operated by the University of the West Indies. Its primary mandate is scientific research in areas of biology, ecology and geology. Among its most important features are coastal plants nurseries, mangroves, corals and seagrasses.
