The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum finished its work on 7 November in Istanbul, Turkey. The Forum is being co-hosted by the CIF and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In the morning, parallel sessions were held to address: making big investments work in renewable energy in the context of sustainable energy for all; enabling private sector investments; sustainable cities; and measuring results and impacts of projects. This was followed by two sessions - on civil society participation in the CIFs, and on hydrometeorological and climate services - in the afternoon. During the closing session, participants heard reports from various panel sessions and the address by Turkey's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz. The meeting drew to a close at 6:00 pm.

The Climate Investment Fund (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum opened on 6 November in Istanbul, Turkey. The Forum is being co-hosted by the CIF and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In the morning, an opening plenary was held, followed by a panel on creating the climate for change, an introduction to the Forum’s sessions, a panel on Turkey’s clean energy initiative, and afternoon parallel sessions on: innovations in engendering climate finance; towards sustainable energy for all– financing energy access for the poor; reporting from the Private Sector Forum; and landscape approaches –addressing mitigation, adaptation and poverty reduction in one go.

The CIF 2012 Private Sector Forum convened on Monday, 5 November, in partnership with Bloomberg New Energy Finance (NEF). This was the first time the CIF Private Sector Forum convened and it is expected to contribute to the CIF 2012 Partnership Forum, which will meet on 6-7 November and is being co-hosted by the CIF and the European Bank in Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Investors, policymakers, project developers and civil society and NGO representatives attended the Forum. The EBRD also held a side event.

The Clean Technology Fund (CTF) countries’ meeting took place today in Istanbul, Turkey, in association with the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum that will convene on 6-7 November. The CTF is one of the two Climate Investment Funds (CIF) focusing on large-scale country-driven projects on renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and energy efficiency. During the meeting, countries shared their experiences and discussed progress on their investment plans, challenges encountered and lessons learnt.

In the evening, a master class on wind power and biodiversity issues took place, addressing negative impacts of wind farms on birds and bats. Egypt, Turkey and South Africa presented country case studies followed by presentations by Ethiopia, US, BirdLife International, and the World Bank. The discussion identified the need for: a better understanding of bird and bat behavior; environmental impact assessments; post-construction monitoring and mitigation of negative impacts; legal and regulatory frameworks; national capacity building; and private sector engagement.

The fourth meeting of pilot countries participating in the Forest Investment Program (FIP) convened today in Istanbul, Turkey, in association with the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum that will convene on 6-7 November. The FIP is one of the three targeted programs under the CIF’s Strategic Climate Fund.

The sixth meeting of pilot countries and regions participating in the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) and the fourth meeting of pilot countries participating in the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) convened today in Istanbul, Turkey, in association with the Climate Investment Fund (CIF) 2012 Partnership Forum that will convene on 6-7 November. Both the PPCR and SREP are programs under the CIF’s Strategic Climate Fund (SCF).
