Development and Climate Days at COP 16

4-5 December 2010 | Cancún, Mexico

The “Development and Climate Days” special event has been a feature of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) for several years. At COP 16, the event as held from 4-5 December at the Cancún Caribe Park Royal Grand in Cancún, Mexico. The 2010 event focussed on supporting the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge by practitioners and researchers from developing countries. The event included sessions on low-carbon growth and development cooperation; community-based institutions and adaptation; adaptation planning and evaluation; financing adaptation and climate-compatible development. communicating climate change; lessons from fair-trade; and climate change and forced migration. As well as the formal presentations and discussions, the event also provided opportunities for networking and hosted a film festival. 

Development and Climate Days is organized by:
*International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED);
*Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS);
*Capacity Strengthening of Least Developed Countries for Adaptation to Climate Change (CLACC);
*Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI);
*International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD); and
*Ring Alliance of Policy Research Organizations.

Richard Klein, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), served as master of ceremonies for the first day’s events.
In the session on adaptation planning, Javier Gonzales Iwanciw, Nur University, Bolivia, presented on integrative approaches to adaptation and mainstreaming into sector programmes in Bolivia.
Atiq Rahman, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), chaired the session on the role of community-based institutions in adaptation.
Bettie Luwuge, Tanzania Forest Conservation Group, during the session on communicating climate change.
Mike Shanahan, IIED, facilitated an interactive session on communicating climate change.
