During IPCC-49, Sophie Schlingemann, Legal and Liaison Officer, IPCC Secretariat, consults with delegates and IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee
IPCC-50 will consider the Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL). Delegates are expected to adopt the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) and approve the underlying report, which addresses climate change, desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. Prior to the report’s consideration by the IPCC, the second Joint Session of Working Groups (WGs) I, II and III will discuss the draft SPM, line-by-line.
The SRCCL will be of interest to many and will contribute to the IPCC’s sixth assessment cycle. It is expected to contribute to both the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) processes and covers many issues addressed by the Sustainable Development Goals.
In April 2016, IPCC-43 took a decision to prepare this special report. The report’s outline was approved by IPCC-45 in March 2017 in Guadalajara, Mexico. One hundred three experts from 52 countries were selected as Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors, who are each working on specific chapters, and Review Editors, who seek to ensure that comments by experts and governments are considered through the development of the report.
The SRCCL is being developed under the joint scientific leadership of WGs I, II, III and the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI), and is supported by the WG III Technical Support Unit (TSU).
Created in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the IPCC aims to provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies.
IPCC-50 will convene from 2-6 August 2019 at WMO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
A press conference will be held on Thursday, 8 August, at 10:00 am Geneva time to present the SPM.
