View of the colorful Carnival celebration in Bonn, Germany

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Technology Executive Committee (TEC) Workshop on Technologies for Adaptation opened with remarks by Gabriel Blanco, Vice-Chair of the TEC, Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, and Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, Chair of the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee (AC), all emphasizing the importance of the workshop as a collaborative effort by the TEC and the AC.

During the day, workshop participants heard twelve presentations by speakers from several organizations and engaged in discussions in plenary and in break out groups. In the morning, participants discussed the roles of technology in adaptation and experiences and lessons learned from development and transfer of technologies for adaptation. Under this theme, they considered success and failure stories, with case studies from Asia, Africa and South America, and, in the afternoon, discussed gaps and challenges for scaling up the development and transfer of technologies for adaptation.

Later in the afternoon, participants discussed potential areas of actions and recommendations by the TEC and identification of topics for TEC briefs, first in break-out groups and then in a final plenary session.

In his concluding remarks, TEC Vice-Chair Blanco highlighted some of the key issues discussed at the workshop, such as: factors for successful implementation and replication of technologies, integrated approaches, South-South transfer of know-how, opportunities for scaling up of technologies, technology assessment, and capacity building. He closed the workshop at 6:29 PM.
