Highlights for Monday, 24 September 2012
On Monday, 24 September, Elizabeth Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), opened the First Meeting of Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks, in Bonn, Germany. In the morning, participants listened to opening remarks and addressed rules of procedure, election of officers, and admission of observers. They also received reports from the secretariat, observers and on the conservation status of migratory sharks. In the afternoon, participants initiated discussion of the draft conservation plan, administrative and budgetary matters, and establishment of the advisory committee.

Sonja Fordham, Sharks Advocates International, presented on sharks’ biological characteristics which have contributed to their decline, emphasizing overfishing as the main cause.

Fernando Spina, Italy, was elected as Chair of the First Meeting of Signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks.

Andrea Pauly, CMS, presented on the procedure for amending the list of species under Annex I of the MoU.

Melanie Virtue, CMS Agreement Officer, summarized the activities of the Interim Secretariat.

Bert Lenten, CMS Deputy Executive Secretary, presented on the Arrangements for the Secretariat and the Draft Terms of Reference of the Advisory Committee.

Sarah Fowler, IUCN Sharks Specialist Group, presented on the conservation status of migratory sharks.
