Greening in practice needs better learning processes

Even if the big steps need more green taxes and tighter regulations, there are a lot of opportunities to generate win-win situations. Implementation of a policy for sustainable production and consumption depends on support from all parties, and it is therefore in the public interest to help the parties to speed up the learning process to realise all these win-win or “greener market” possibilities. Elements that could be strengthened or started, include

  • - Developing a short, universally understandable and credible concept for why we need to make the change.
  • - Further stimulation through the “problem - owner” of cleaner technology.
  • - Shift from one way information to communication when it is relevant to exchange new knowledge and experiences and when feedback about how it is working in a broader context is needed.
  • - Experiment with new learning techniques (outreaching, benchmarking etc.)
  • - Make experience available through broker facilities.
  • - Consolidate and expand a catalytic body for market driven environmental management:

GRIP is a government funded collaboration with business, trade unions and NGOs. GRIP develops and field tests methods that increase eco-effectivity by maximising customer satisfaction and minimising environmental load in pilotprojects. The methods and results are then documented and distributed as “Do-it-yourself” manuals and in seminars. The general methodology “Market driven environmental management” has been documented and is being spread to the business school environment in the form of lectures, cases and aticles. GRIP is also playing a central role in developing eco- benchmarking techniques for buildings. Following a trial three year period, GRIP is now being established as a permanent centre with a broader mandate. According to this mandate GRIP will also be launched internationally. GRIP will contribute actively to, and facilitate the exchange of experiences, inter alia through international organisations and various international seminars.
