Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change

The Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) to Climate Change went into its third day on Friday, 26 February 2010.

In the morning, participants met in a plenary session that focused on the scaling up and replication of best CBA practices. They also met in parallel thematic sessions on: vulnerable groups; specifically women and children; the role of ecosystems in adaptation; disaster risk reduction; and CBA methodologies.

In the afternoon, participants met in a plenary session on funding CBA.

Plenary Session
Rachel Berger, Practical Action, chaired the morning plenary session on scaling up and replicating best practices.
Douglas Gumbo, Practical Action-Zimbabwe, spoke about the critical success factors for scaling up CBA technologies in semi-arid areas.
Mohamed Siddig Suliman, Practical Action-Sudan, presented on scaling up work to increase resilience to drought by strengthening civil society organizations.
Charlotte Sterrett, Oxfam, discussed incorporating sustainable livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and natural resource management into climate change adaptation approaches.

Parallel Thematic Sessions
Marcus Oxley, Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction, discussed building an independent participatory monitoring process for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
Euster Kibona, Tanzania’s Environmental Protection and Management Services, chaired the session on disaster risk reduction.
Oenone Chadburn, Tearfund, presented on the climate change and environmental degradation risk and adaptation assessment.
