Summary of the Meeting

Thursday, 31 March 2011

The Fifth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation wrapped up at 12:58 pm on Thursday after a final plenary and concluding session which included an address by Rajendra Pachauri, IPCC Chair.

The sessions highlighted key lessons learned and main themes of the conference. Additionally, it was announced that the Sixth CBA conference will take place in Vietnam in 2012.

WEDNESDAY, 30 MARCH 2011

On Wednesday, adaptation professionals met again in the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka in two plenaries and six technical sessions, covering issues ranging from CBA knowledge management, to health related issues of climate change and the role of ecosystems in adaptation to climate change.

Met with the most interest however, was the plenary on funding and funding architecture, where options, opportunities, challenges and news were shared on this hot topic.

On Tuesday, the CBA’s 300 participants bustled around the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka, improving capacities to scale up CBA in six technical sessions, engaging in interactive games in which they sometimes had to dodge flying frisbees in three plenaries, and perusing the morning and afternoon poster sessions.

Topics of the day included discussions on the economics of CBA, synergies between disaster risk reduction and CBA; institutional capacity dimensions of scaling up CBA; tools and toolkits for adaptation; national policy action to foster CBA; agriculture, local resilience and climate prediction services; communicating knowledge about CBA.
