Highlights from Friday, 20 August
ICID 2010 convened on Friday, 20 August 2010, in plenary to address the lessons and recommendations emerging from conference sessions, the reading, discussion, revision and acceptance of the Fortaleza Declaration, which seeks to elevate the priority of climate change and sustainable development in arid and semi-arid regions in the agenda of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 Earth Summit), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference concluded at 5.38 pm after a closing ceremony.
Following a closing ceremony, the conference concluded with a message from ICID 2010 Director Antônio Magalhães, who emphasized the importance of sustainable development to address the vulnerability of semi-arid regions to climate change and hoped that the Fortaleza Declaration will guide discussion of these issues in the lead-up the the Rio+20 Earth Summit. |
