Highlights for Wednesday, 22 October 2008

 

The joint meeting of the Sixty-sixth session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Timber Council and Thirty-fourth session of the FAO European Forestry Commission met for its second day on Wednesday, 22 October 2008. During the morning, participants met in plenary and in a parallel meeting of the UNECE Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management that also met in the afternoon.

FOREST AND ENERGY SESSION:

 

Participants met in a morning plenary to consider Forests and Energy. Ralph Sims, International Energy Agency, delivered the keynote presentation highlighting current forestry and energy issues and trends, carbon sequestration, bioenergy, biomass supply potential and greenhouse gas emissions.


 
MARKET DISCUSSION: FOREST AND ENERGY

PARALLEL SESSIONS:

 
In addition, parallel policy dialogues convened as part of the European Forest Week. The UNECE held a policy dialogue on “Wood energy in the region, latest information and trends.” The European Forest Institute convened an information event on “Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) activities.” The policy dialogue on potential wood supply in Europe was convened by the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF), UNECE and FAO. The UNECE and FAO Team of Specialist on Gender also convened a dialogue on Gender and Forestry. The IUFRO and Finnish Forest Research Institute held a policy dialogue on “Forests, promoting or harming human health.” Silva Mediterranean, the Joint Research Centre Ispra of the EC, the FAO and the Corpo Forestale dello Stato Italiano also held a dialogue on fire management.
