Regional Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE) -
“Energy between Danube and Caucasus”
The Role of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency as a Key Issue for Economic Development

28-29 April 2011 | Vienna, Austria

Highlights for Thursday, 28 April 2011
GFSE
The Regional Global Forum on Sustainable Energy (GFSE) meeting on Energy between Danube and Caucasus opened on Thursday, 28 April 2011, in Vienna, Austria. Attended by about 200 participants, including decision makers from the focus regions and the EU, private sector representatives, academia and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the meeting’s focus on renewable energy in a time of rising energy prices and increased concern over nuclear energy, was considered by many participants to be very timely. The meeting is being held at the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce and was opened by GFSE Convenor, Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl, who stressed that energy policy transcends the boundaries of EU membership and has the potential of promoting more intense regional cooperation. Representatives of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, and the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs also provided opening statements. Throughout the day, plenary sessions considered the state of play of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the focus regions; and initiatives at the EU and bi- and multilateral levels. In the afternoon, parallel sessions addressed developing policy and institutions for renewable energy and energy efficiency, and regional cooperation approaches. The meeting will continue on Friday, 29 April, with parallel and plenary sessions and a site visit to ENERGYbase and the Austrian Institute of Technology.
