Highlights for Thursday, 26 April 2007

On Thursday, 26 April 2007, the European Regional Consultation of the Consultative Process Towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB) opened in Geneva, Switzerland. After introductory statements, participants listened to several presentations, exchanged views and discussed options on a possible IMoSEB. The consultation is scheduled to conclude on 28 April. It is the third in a series of regional consultations for the IMoSEB process.

Opening Session
Sophie Condé, EEA-CTE representative, presented forecasts on biodiversity and sustainability in Europe, noting key factors and threats at the regional and sub-regional levels.
Sybille van den Hove, Autonomous University of Barcelona, explained that science-policy interfaces for biodiversity in Europe are co-evolving, are not limited to scientific assessment and should ideally allow for critical assessment of scientific output in light of end-user needs.
Roundtable and Discussion
François Laurans, VEOLIA Environnement, discussed the integration of biodiversity into business processes.
Jean Claude Lefeuvre, French Institute for Biodiversity, highlighted constraints and challenges for integrated management of biodiversity and to ensure a conducive environment for fostering the science-policy interface.
Brian Wynne, Lancaster University, presented on “what kind of knowledge for effective biodiversity policy?”
Michel Loreau, Co-Chair of the IMoSEB EC, said biodiversity is a low priority on the global agenda, and that an IMoSEB should be used to develop consensus and global awareness through assessments.
Peter Bridgewater, Ramsar Convention, called for a "new creature" and research translators to communicate scientific findings to the policy level in order to overcome the "dialogue of the deaf".
Marthe Chouchena-Rojas, IUCN, provided an overview of needs for an IMoSEB as identified by the Executive Committee.
