On Thursday, 15 November 2007, the final meeting of the International Steering Committee of the Consultative Process Towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB) opened in Montpellier, France. Participants heard opening presentations in the morning, followed by roundtable discussions and a general discussion on the need, scope and forms for an IMoSEB, which continued into the afternoon.

The final International Steering Committee meeting, which is scheduled to conclude on 17 November 2007, addresses outcomes from six regional consultations on an IMoSEB which have taken place since January 2007.

Opening Segment

L-R: André Menez, President of the Paris Museum of Natural History; Anne-Yvonne Le Dain, Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Council representative;  Alfred Oteng-Yeboah, Co-Chair of the IMoSEB Executive Committee; and Michel Loreau, Co-Chair of the IMoSEB Executive Committee.

André Menez recalled that the IMoSEB consultative process addresses a request to provide a network of expertise, including intergovernmental and non-governmental components and building on existing entities and institutions, to raise global awareness on biodiversity.

Co-Chair Alfred Oteng-Yeboah welcomed delegates to the final meeting of the Steering Committee of the Consultative Process towards an IMoSEB.

Roundtable Discussions

Participants attended roundtables and discussions on the needs identified at the biodiversity knowledge and decision-making processes interface and the need for an IMoSEB as well as on the options for an IMoSEB formulated by the regional and others consultations.
