Highlights for Friday, 14 June 2013
MICs High-Level Conference
The High-Level Conference of Middle Income Countries (MICs) convened for its final day on 14 June 2013, in San José, Costa Rica. Delegates gathered for a breakfast dialogue on the development classification of MICs, which discussed using alternate criteria for classifying MICs as opposed to the currently income-only measure. This was followed by a high-level dialogue entitled “Post-Busan Financing for Achieving Sustained Prosperity.” During the dialogue, delegates addressed: the future of development financing; whether official development assistance will be relevant; the role of South-South financial cooperation; and other potential mechanisms for development financing.

Delegates then heard a presentation on the Industrial Knowledge Bank, which is a mechanism to promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise for advancing industrial and productive capacities in Latin America and the Caribbean. During the closing session, participants heard a keynote speech from Luis Liberman, Costa Rican Vice President. They also heard addresses from: Yoriko Yasukawa, UN Resident Coordinator in Costa Rica; Sarwar Hobohm, Director for Strategic Planning, Donor Partnerships and Quality Assurance, UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); and Enrique Castillo Barrantes, Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Affairs. The San José Declaration was adapted by acclamation.

Castillo closed the meeting at 12.33pm.
