High-Level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy

La Conferencia de Alto Nivel sobre Seguridad Alimentaria: los Desafíos del Cambio Climático y la Bioenergía continuó el 4 de junio de 2008 en la sede de la Organización de las NU para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO) en Roma, Italia. Durante el día y por la noche, el Segmento de Alto Nivel escuchó los discursos de los Jefes de Estado y Gobierno, los Jefes de las delegaciones y los Invitados Especiales. El Comité Plenario (CP) realizó cuatro mesas redondas durante el día. El Grupo de Trabajo Informal, de composición abierta, también se reunió durante el día para continuar trabajando sobre el proyecto de declaración. Este proyecto fue considerado por el CP en una sesión realizada al final del día.

Marigen Hornkohl Venegas, Minister for Agriculture of Chile, emphasized the role played by the Rome-based institutions in complementing the work of the UN High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis.
Gerda Verburg, Minister for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands, noted that we consume more resources than can be regenerated.

Mesa redonda 2: Cambio climático y seguridad alimentaria

 
Participants addressed mitigation and adaptation strategies, public-private partnerships, economic growth, and local agricultural development.
Erik Solheim, Minister for International Development of Norway, asked the group to consider, inter alia: incentives for local land users; how to represent vulnerable groups’ interests; and how climate change affects food access.

Mesa redonda 4: Bioenergía y seguridad alimentaria


 
Guillermo Salazar Nicolau , Minister of Agricultural Development, Panama, identified the present food crisis as an opportunity to promote sustainable development. Pat Mooney, Executive Director of the Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration (ETC Group), said even second-generation biofuel crops will inevitably displace food crops, calling this “morally unacceptable.”

 
Common themes throughout the sessions included empowering small-scale farmers, water resources management and the importance of linking public policies across sectors.
