SIDS Day and Review of CSD-13 Water and Sanitation Decisions

The sixteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16) entered its second week on Monday, 12 May, 2008, at United Nations headquarters in New York. In the morning and afternoon, participants in one session heard presentations and exchanged views on issues affecting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) as part of SIDS Day. The other session, reviewing CSD-13 decisions on water and sanitation, began in late morning and continued in the afternoon.

The Learning Centre and Partnership Fair also convened throughout the day, and side events were held during the lunch break and the evening.

Thematic session: SIDS

The "SIDS Day" session, chaired by Chair Nhema, featured morning panelists Rolph Payet (Small Islands Voice) and Jacqueline daCosta (Jamaica). Panelists and participants heard statements by Under-Secretary-General Sha Zukang and Under-Secretary-General Cheick Sidi Diarra, and discussed land policy, administration and management and desertification, drought and invasive species in SIDS.

Review of CSD-13 Decisions: Water and Sanitation

The review session, chaired by CSD-16 Vice-Chair Tri Tharyat (Indonesia), featured panelists Jae So (WSP), Piers Cross (WSP Africa), Antonio Miranda (UNSGAB), Bert Diphoorn (UN-HABITAT) and Roberto Lenton (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council). Participants and panelists discussed provision of safe drinking water, sanitation, partnerships for capacity building and technology transfer, improvement of water utilities, limitations and constraints to engaging stakeholders in implementation, strenghtening monitoring and reporting, scale-up of good practices, and means of implementation.

Side Events

In the afternoon, the Partnerships Fair offered an introductory training on evaluating cross-sector partnerships, presented by Darian Stibbe, Development Director of The Partnering Initiative - International Business Leaders Forum.

A lunchtime side event on "The Survival of Small Island Developing States: Seeking a Breakthrough in Sustainable Development" was presented by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The World Federation of United Nations Associations presented an evening side event on "Water and Climate Change - Adaptation, Risk Assessment and Water Resource Management."
