CSD completes review, receives Chair's draft

The sixteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16) convened for its seventh day on Tuesday, 13 May, 2008, at United Nations headquarters in New York. Throughout the day, panelists and participants continued to review CSD-13 decisions on water and sanitation. In the late afternoon, CSD-16 Chair Francis Nhema (Zimbabwe) introduced part I of his Chair's summary.

The Learning Centre and Partnership Fair also continued throughout the day, and side events were held at lunchtime and the evening.

With thematic discussions and review of past decisions completed, CSD-16 will begin its High-Level Segment on Wednesday, 14 May, with an address by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in the General Assembly Hall.

Review of CSD-13 Decisions: Water and Sanitation

The day's discussions were chaired by CSD-16 Vice-Chair Tri Tharyat (Indonesia). In the morning, delegates heard brief presentations by panelists Margaret Catley-Carlson (UNSGAB), Mike Muller (South Africa), David Molden (International Water Management Institute) and Daniel Zimmer (World Water Council). Panelists and participants discussed integrated water resource management, water efficiency plans, enhancing water productivity in different uses, strenghtening water management and governance at all levels, and enhancing international cooperation in water management.

In the afternoon, panelists Bruno Itoua (President, African Ministers' Council on Water), Abel Mejia (World Bank), Margaret Batty (WaterAid) and Omar Giacoman (Evensen Dodge International) made short presentations. Panelists and participants discussed financing water and sanitation services, integrating the water and sanitation agenda into the broader development framework to meet the MDGs and other internationally agreed development goals, and the way forward.

Distribution of Chair's Draft Summary
In late afternoon, Part I of the draft Chair's summary was circulated, and after a brief suspension of plenary to allow delegates to review the document, Chair Nhema re-convened a plenary session to receive comments on the draft.

Side Events

During a morning Partnership Fair session, Heather Creech (IISD) and Helen Marquard (Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development, SEED) discussed the SEED Initiative, which supports partnerships for locally-led sustainable development.

The World Water Council and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a lunchtime side event, "Toward a Global Water Agenda - Preparing the World Water Forum in Istanbul."

UN-Water organized a lunchtime side event on "The MDG Water and Sanitation Target: Refining the Monitoring Tools."

The Swedish Government and the East African Community presented an evening side event on "Joint Efforts in Development of the Lake Victoria Basin, East Africa: A Partnership in Realization."
