The High-Level Segment continued on Thursday with roundtable discussions on "Realizing a Sustainable Green Revolution in Africa" and "Integrated Land and Water Management." CSD 17 delegates also negotiated draft recommendations in Working Groups and multiple informal consultations throughout the day and into the night. Special Event: Presentation of final report of the International Commission on Climate Change and Development |
| This report was presented to the UN Secretary-General and provides the international community with a number of conclusions and recommendations focusing on adaptation to climate change, in particular on strengthening and supporting vulnerable countries and communities. |

Securitizing the ground – Grounding Security |
| The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs of Spain organized a side event to announce the new study "Securitizing the ground – Grounding Security." The speakers discussed the concept of "securitizing the ground," a new concept of soil security as a complement to the established concepts of food and water security. On "grounding security," the study calls for proactive strategies, policies and measures to achieve soil security in the context of the UNCCD' Ten-Year Strategy. |

| Special Event:
Presentation to the United Nations of the EL Faro Commission Petitions |
El Faro was the name of the NGO Pavilion at the 2008 Zaragoza Expo on Water and Sustainable Development. This Pavilion served as a forum for
discussion, reflection and inspiration for NGO representatives at the Expo and enabled them to directly interact with the millions of
people who visited the Expo. The Pavilion was managed by the El Faro Commission representing 347 NGOs active in the areas of water and sanitation. The Commission drafted a set of 12 "requests/petitions'' for which they gathered over 108,000 signatures during the 90 day Expo period. These petitions were then presented to the United Nations. |
