THE SEVENTH SESSION OF THE UN COMMISSION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Briefing for Wednesday, 28 April

Informal negotiations deal with the difficult issues at CSD-7

Three drafting groups met at the seventh session of the Commission on Sustainable Development to proceed with negotiations on tourism, changing consumption and production patterns, oceans and preparations for CSD-9's consideration of energy. Some of the issues that will shape the outcome of the session, however, will require further informal negotiations "off stage". During deliberations in Drafting Group II, for example, the G-77/China let it be known that more time would be needed for informal consultations on decisions about future international cooperation on and coordination of oceans and marine issues. Likewise, informal negotiations on preparations for the General Assembly's consideration of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in September continued to address the contentious issue of globalization and the liberalization of trade and how these impact on SIDS. A classic CSD compromise text must bridge the gap between alternatives currently under consideration. These note the possible benefits of globalization and trade liberalization for SIDS and address the responsibility of the international community to facilitate the integration of SIDS into the world economy.
