Highlights for Saturday, 9 March 2013
ECLACOn Saturday, 9 March, the Conference on Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: follow-up to the UN development agenda beyond 2015 and to Rio+20 convened to continue discussing the follow-up to Rio+20, sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda.

In the morning, participants heard a presentation on how to measure progress on sustainable development from Ivo Hachinga, Chief of the Economic Statistics Branch of the UN Statistics Division. Amb. Jose Luis Balmaceda, Chile, then made a presentation on the ongoing process to establish a Principle 10 instrument in the region, underscoring the valuable role played by civil society. Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras announced their intention to become signatories to the regional “Declaration on the application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development.”

In the closing ceremony, participants heard closing statements. ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena said the meeting had raised encouraging proposals and an “enormous fertility of ideas,” creating an environment for a shared vision for the future. Highlighting the priority of reducing inequality in the region, she cited Simon Bolivar, who said “without equality, all freedoms and all rights perish.” Alva Baptiste, Minister for External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation, Saint Lucia, said that, with a mutual purpose, a new period in history could be created, calling for substantial engagement in the decision-making process of “all the actors in the drama of development.”

Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Patriota discussed continuity in efforts towards achieving the MDGs, while also implementing the results of Rio+20, including SDGs. Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs María Ángela Holguín suggested holding an annual regional meeting on sustainable development, so the region can stay united and continue helping each other, and that ECLAC assist in this regard. She then adjourned the meeting at 1:05 pm.
