The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the nineteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 19) began at UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting was opened by CSD 19 Chair László Borbély, Minister of Environment and Forests of Romania, and Sha Zukang, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or “Rio 2012”). Following the adoption of the agenda (E/CN.17/IPM/2011/1), delegates heard opening statements from governments and Major Groups, as well as reports on intersessional meetings held since CSD 18.
In the afternoon, delegates reconvened for a session on small island developing States (SIDS). Three expert panelists spoke on SIDS in the context of sustainable consumption and production, transport, waste management and chemicals. Delegates then responded to the panel presentations with statements and questions. Some discussed the High-level Review Meeting on the Implementation of the Mauritius Strategy in September 2010. Others raised the value of collaboration and partnerships and the potential establishment of goals and benchmarks to help measure progress on issues of concern to SIDS. |
