The thirteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 13) will be held at Ordos International Convention and Exhibition Center, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, from 6-16 September 2017. The meeting will include the sixteenth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 16), and the thirteenth session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST 13), as well as a high-level segment scheduled for 11 and 12 September 2017. Meetings of the Regional Implementation Annexes are scheduled to take place on 4-5 September 2017.

Parties will consider, apart from organizational matters: integration of Sustainable Development Goal 15 Target 3 (desertification and achieving a land degradation-neutral world) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into the UNCCD implementation; the future strategic framework of the Convention; and implementation of the comprehensive communication strategy and the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification (2010–2020). The CRIC will focus on ways to assist Parties in their regular review of the implementation of the Convention, addressing regional and national conditions, strengthening relationships with other relevant conventions, and securing additional investments and the relations with financial mechanisms. The CST will link scientific knowledge with decision making and make recommendations in this regard to the COP.

Special segments will include: three parallel high-level round-table discussions on land degradation, drought and dust storms, and land degradation neutrality; a dialogue with civil society on gender and land rights; a dialogue with elected and local government representatives on the role of local governments in addressing the challenges of land degradation; and a dialogue with the private sector on its role in achieving land degradation neutrality.

Parties are expected to adopt the Strategic Framework that will guide action under the Convention from 2018-2030.
