Coping with Drought in Africa: UNDP/WMO sponsored panel event

Objectives of this side event were to present a status of efforts to develop and implement policy on drought preparedness and mitigation, increase awareness of the need to promote drought preparedness and mitigation in National Action Programmes, and inform participants of a recent survey to understand the use of climate and drought information by farmers. Philip Dobie, Director, UNDP/UNSO moderated the event. Tijan Jallow, UNDP/UNSO, presented recent trends, status and institutional capacity in drought management and constraints to drought policy and planning development. Panelists included Idé Bana, Senior Advisor, Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), Don WIlhite, Director, US National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC), M.V. K. Sivakumar, Chief, Agricultural Meteorology Division, World Meteorological Organization, and Jim Buizer, Director, International Programmes, US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
