The third Special Session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-3) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), together with the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference, will convene from 9-12 April 2013, at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany. Immediately following these events, regional preparatory meetings will convene, to feed into the eleventh session of the UNCCD Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11), which will take place from 15-19 April, at the same venue.
Participants at the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference will consider the theme “Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas.” The Scientific Conference is organized by GRF Davos, as the lead institution, under the guidance of the CST Bureau.
The CST S-3 deliberations will include: the work of the ad hoc Advisory Group of Technical Experts (AGTE) in refining the impact indicators; review of scientific information submitted by affected country Parties during the 2012 reporting and review cycle; and preparations for the UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference, which will consider the theme “Combating desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) for poverty reduction and sustainable development: the contribution of science, technology, traditional knowledge and practices.”
The eleventh session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 11) will take place at the same venue from 15-19 April. The same will be preceded by regional meetings preparatory to the CRIC11. The CRIC agenda includes analysis of information contained in reports: from country Parties and others on operational objectives 1 to 4 of the UNCCD’s ten-year strategy, related to performance indictors; from affected country Parties on strategic objectives 1 to 3 of the strategy, related to impact indicators; and from country parties, UN agencies, the Global Mechanism and the UNCCD Secretariat related to financial flows for implementation of the Convention. Delegates will also, inter alia, review information regarding the mid-term evaluation of the strategy and have an open dialogue session with civil society organizations.
