Highlights for Wednesday, 21 March
The fifth session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 5) ended on Wednesday, 21 March 2007. During the morning, participants considered the report on the status of celebration of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification and discussed the IIWG’s draft report on the 10-year strategic plan for the UNCCD. In the afternoon they adopted the CRIC 5 report to the eighth session of the UNCCD Conference of Parties (COP 8). The meeting was closed at 4:37 pm.

Chair Moore introduced the draft report of CRIC 5 and, following some minor editorial amendments, it was adopted.

 
Chair Moore thanked Bruno Dettori, Senator and Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Environment, Italy, for his attendance at CRIC 5.
 
 
   
Bruno Dettori, Italy, welcomed the results of CRIC 5, saying that it has identified the best strategy to address many concerns shared by Parties.
 
Romina Picolotti, Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development, Argentina, reiterated her country’s commitment in fighting desertification.
 
Hama Arba Diallo, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, said that the meeting had provided participants with the opportunity to discuss the important issue of fighting desertification, and that the conclusions and recommendations produced would contribute to the work of COP 8.
 
 
Giselle Beja Valent,Uruguay, presented the report of CRIC 5.
 
Delegates applauded the approval of the report of CRIC 5.

Rajeb Boulharouf, Secretariat, introduced the interim report on the status of celebration of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, which he described as a snapshot of the process.
 
Farhana Haque-Rahman, IFAD, outlined an international conference on women and desertification.

Leopoldo Rojo Serrano, Spain, announced that COP 8 will be hosted in Madrid, Spain, from 3-14 September 2007.
